What is MRSA?

MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is a particular strain of bacteria that is resistant to the antibiotic Methicillin. Staphylococcus aureus is a group of bacteria that lives on the surface of people's skin and inside the nose. In fact according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), it is estimated that up to 30% of the general population.- 90 million people in the US - carry these bacteria.

Why is MRSA a concern?

Approximately 12 million people receive treatment for skin infections caused by MRSA each year according to the CDC's Jeff Hageman. Staphylococcus aureus bacteria have been known to cause boils, abscesses, impetigo, septic wounds, heart-valve problems and toxic shock syndrome. In extreme cases, it can result in death.

Risk Factors

Participation in contact sports (the bacteria can spread via skin-to-skin contact and through abrasions)
Living in crowded conditions, such as in the military, on ships or in prison
Age (children and the elderly are more at risk)
Recent antibiotic use
A compromised immune system
Living with someone who works in a health care setting
A recent hospitalization
Certain invasive medical procedures such as catheterization, dialysis and feeding tubes

Prevent MRSA infection

Wash hands and body thoroughly with soap and water
Use Hand Sanitizer after hand washing or in between hand washings
Be sure to keep cuts and scrapes clean and bandaged
Avoid contact with other people's cuts, scrapes and bandages
Do not share personal items like towels, razors or utensils
